Senator, House, and Congress - Support My Fight for Lumbee Recognition

As a proud Lumbee and Deaf author, I’ve spent my life telling stories rooted in truth, healing, and identity. But I’m also using my voice to speak up for something bigger: the long-overdue federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe.

Recently, I wrote to members of Congress in support of H.R. 474 – The Lumbee Fairness Act. This bill would finally give the Lumbee people full federal recognition and access to resources we’ve been denied for generations.

Today, I’m honored to share that three leaders in Congress have replied to my message. Their letters show that our voices are being heard and that momentum is growing.

Response from

Senator Thom Tillis

“For generations, the Lumbee Tribe has fought for full federal recognition…

I co-sponsored the Lumbee Fairness Act to help the Lumbee Tribe gain the recognition they deserve.”

— Senator Ted Budd

His full letter explains the history of the 1956 denial and confirms that he’s officially co-sponsoring H.R. 474.

Why This Matters

We’ve waited far too long. But with every letter, every story, and every book we’re showing the world that the Lumbee Nation is still here. Still speaking. Still rising.

Thank you to those leaders who responded. I hope many more will follow.
