This moment means the world to me.

Today, I was honored to meet with Chairman John Lowery of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina to share my books and my journey as a Deaf Lumbee author. We talked, we cried together about our fathers, and he gifted me something I will cherish forever his first Chairman’s Coin ever handed out. He also gave coins to two of my children and offered tickets to the upcoming Lumbee Pow Wow this September.

What touched me even deeper was when he told me:

“I’ve been watching your Facebook. You’ve inspired me—I want to write a book.”

As someone who writes from grief, from memory, from spirit I couldn’t believe I had inspired the Chairman himself to start writing. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a meeting… it was a moment of shared spirit and healing.
